Hey,

You are right – there is a lot of valuable information coming

<span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
effort – whereby the genuinely useful information coming through the list can
be condensed and re-published (without all of the noise). I’m not sure whether
something out there exists to do it or not, but in my mind the ideal way of
doing this would be a web application that receives all of the emails from the
list and indexes them into a list of threads, with the messages from each
thread listed in that thread – then through a wiki-style approach allows
members of the list to do a write-up of the useful information from that
thread. The site should provide good searching and browsing functionality, and
preferably some keyword categorisation/tagging system.

<span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";

<span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
up with a website that publishes all of the useful information from the list in
a useful condensed format, while providing access to all of the context
information of the actual thread – without forcing you to trawl through it. A
community mechanism to tag specific thread posts could also be used to “sticky”
certain particularly popular posts. This approach also had the advantage that
even if no write-up is done, the actual thread is still available.

special-interest communities.

This bit of the conversation reminded me of www.beprofessional.com (introduced to
me by Michelle Bray from this group) which even in its free, Lite version has
plenty of good resources for the startup:

it is searchable at a later date – often content does not appear relevant

Hi Geoff,

Great idea! With this in mind, we introduced a wiki sections on Smarta.com under each of our 'bitesize' advice guides and have started populating them with all the great tips being shared on this forum and others. Our aim is to build a comprehensive, mostly user-generated resource which supplements the editorial advice & video entrepreneurs interviews.

The other feature we've introduced is a Q&A section – same principle as this meetup forum but not as advanced in terms of functionality just yet - this is definitely something we will be developing in the next few months. We've also partnered with a legal firm to provide free legal advice as part of this Q&A.

It's early days (we're 3 months old today) and we're still improving the depth and quality of the content, as well as the functionality of the site. We would really welcome your feedback in terms of how we can make the platform as useful as possible to you in the context of this conversation. So if you have any thoughts on this, we'd love to hear them.

Lastly and on a different note, we've got a few startups contributing 'video diaries' (the idea is to share your experiences of the week with other startups). So if anyone is interested in taking part, please get in touch. A good example video from CityAmigo here: http://www.smarta.com/inspiration/video-diaries (the rest can be found here: http://www.smarta.com/inspiration/video-diaries).

Cheers,

>>> No, as far as I'm concerned there's no post that's too bespoke.
>>> I was just intrigued, I'm <25 and thought at first glance it sounded
>>> quite pre-historic and promotes a divide, after all, that's what it is - its
>>> like solving the race issue by having race-specific pubs and restaurants
>>> (which sounds familiar!).
>>> The world is a changing place, I don't believe there is such a thing as
>>> 'old boys networks', they are just social networks made only of men, because
>>> there are more men in business, and after all, men have been
>>> in business longer. Now more women are getting into business, taking the
>>> top-spots and essentially diluting these networks to the point where they
>>> will die out. I'm not saying they will never exist, because they will, but I
>>> don't believe the intentions are such as to create a divide.
>>> It looks like what the UK government are doing (and the frequent women
>>> only meet ups) are promoting women only networks. Solution? Or problem
>>> accelerated?
>>> But then again, I'm not a woman and so have no experience of the issue. I
>>> might have been blissfully unaware my penis was short cutting me to success.
>>> Onwards & upwards!
>>>> Hi Geoff,
>>>>
>>>> I guess in the same spirit as there are grants for businesses in certain
>>>> areas (Enfield,Islington...) or incentives for young people with lower
>>>> education to start businesses , there are now this fund for women
>>>> led-businesses.
>>>> Apparently it comes from studies that showed that women had more
>>>> difficulty to access equity funding (old boys networks, not a good knowledge
>>>> of the various sources of funding,etc...)
>>>>
>>>> Obviously I haven't lived long enough in the UK to judge the rationale
>>>> here but having lived in other countries and also met women entrepreneurs
>>>> from various cultures and background, I know this is sometimes a cultural
>>>> sensitive issue.
>>>>
>>>> I guess the UK government has chosen to lead by example here by trying
>>>> to reduce the gap.
>>>>
>>>> This scheme is new and I just wanted to know if some women have come
>>>> across that already or if people have provided support to eligible
>>>> businesses. Just to share experience and give advice really.
>>>>
>>>> I don't know the proportion of women Entrepreneurs on the list, so I
Just to further my 'no experience of this issue' point.

I hope nobody thinks I'm poo pooing the fund, if this is an issue, which it seems it is, and this is bridging the divide then I'm all in favour : )

Thanks,

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

I guess in the same spirit as there are grants for businesses in certain areas (Enfield,Islington…) or incentives for young people with lower education to start businesses , there are now this fund for women led-businesses.
Apparently it comes from studies that showed that women had more difficulty to access equity funding (old boys networks, not a good knowledge of the various sources of funding,etc…)

Obviously I haven't lived long enough in the UK to judge the rationale here but having lived in other countries and also met women entrepreneurs from various cultures and background, I know this is sometimes a cultural sensitive issue.

I guess the UK government has chosen to lead by example here by trying to reduce the gap.

This scheme is new and I just wanted to know if some women have come across that already or if people have provided support to eligible businesses. Just to share experience and give advice really.

I don't know the proportion of women Entrepreneurs on the list, so I apologise if this was maybe a too bespoke post.

sorry for the bespoke question here (but they are all to some extent).

I was wondering if any woman Entrepreneur or woman-led business had gone for matched funding equity with the Aspire Fund?

For reference : the £12.5m Aspire Fund targets support for Women led businesses across the UK. The fund is able to make equity investments of between £100k and £1m, on a co-investment basis, in order to help strong businesses grow.

The objective of the fund is to increase the number of successful Women led businesses within the UK, ensuring that those with real potential to succeed are not held back through a lack of growth capital.

Than you for your testimonial and advice.

Kind regards,
Barbara
