In my years of running development teams (both internal and outsourced),
I find useful technical attributes, besides coding ability, are that the
candidate has enthusiasm and flexibility. I have come across perfectly
competent developers who have become cynical about the development
business who soured the atmosphere (and the team). Enthusiastic guys
often like to explain precisely why, for example, PHP v5.3 is better
than v5.2.8 - and how it might solve a problem or two for you. Your
candidate should also be able to operate outside a narrow technical
box. I once came across a developer who could think like a compiler but
was unable to work from a design. Every small point had to be specified
completely. He didn't last long...

As has been alluded to elsewhere on the thread, when taking over
outsourced developed code, a code audit is a useful process. This
needn't take long and can point to areas of weakness (if any) that may
need to be tackled. Simply relying on the functionality to be correct
does not guarantee decent code or database schemas etc. It does require
a technically competent person, one who has been at the coal face and
who can spot architectural problems and so on.

> Hi everyone.
>
> Long time listener, first time caller.
>
> I was hoping that someone on this group could offer some advice...
>
> We're in the business of building and running online communities for
> research and innovation, which we deliver to brands and agencys. Part
> of our proposition is the delivery of our bespoke social network tool.
>
> To date, we have been working with an external agency, who have done a
> good job at building our product to specification. However, as
> business ramps up, we are looking to refine the product and introduce
> new features and services. As such, it has become necessary to recruit
> a developer, who is versed in the use open source tools (LAMP).
>
> We've looked around and have a good final list of candidates, who we
> feel could be a good 'fit' to our existing team.
>
> The one area that we have yet to test for is the ability to actually
> code - including their approach to coding. Not having these skills
> internally, it is difficult for us to achieve this. As such we were
> hoping to find some form of test that we could give them.
>
> In my mind, I thinking of a simple 1-2 hour exercise, whereby the
> candidates could make a simple web application/service/feature, which
> would demonstrate their skills. We have a friendly developer who could
> then look through what they have made and give us an idea of their
> abilities.
>
> Is there such a test that people know of? If not, perhaps there is a
> different approach that someone has used successfully?
>
> Either way, I would very much appreciate any ideas people may have.
>
> Thanks in advance

> Decisions will be afflicted by politics (MPs defending marginal seats
> will want pork for their constituency), bureaucracy, political
> correctness and regional policy - never a recipe for optimal
> allocation of resources. And there will be pressure to keep funding
> 'lame ducks' that private investors would just leave to die.
>
> A radio 4 interview I heard asked how the US was able to find so many
> projects so quickly for 'public funding' as part of Obama's economic
> stimulus - the answer was easy these were all the projects that had
> already been rejected as hairbrained or non-viable that were just
> being re-presented!
>
> The only way it would work would be as a blind investor letting a VC
> or business angel association take the lead, evaluate the business
> case and value the opportunity. But would that not just crowd out
> funds that would have invested anyway.
>
> Maybe tax breaks for investment or reviving the small business loan
> schemes would work - or how about creating a fund that would allow
> entrepreneurs to claim a minimum and decent revenue when they work on
> first few months of a start up (having worked and lived in France for
> several years, many of the entreprenuers I met 'arranged' to be made
> redundant to be able claim two years salary from the ASSEDIC - 60% of
> the old salary paid by the government - while they worked on a start
> up. It was possible as long as you only took dividends and no salary!
> Makes you wonder why there are not more French entreprenuers? That is
> because they try and kill entrepreneurs with taxes and redtape as soon
> as they are successful, but thats another story). I always wondered
> why we spend so much money for the unemployed to sit on their
> backsides but never help those that try to help themselves.
>
> Thats my rant over!

Agree with that, there are numerous factors. If I was you I would not
can try them out first. Finding the right person for the job is not
easy. Finding the wrong person is *very* easy!
Regarding your question on which schools good developers come from -
none! The best developers come from experience, not schools. You can
hire "normal" developers any time for, as Chris mentioned, both sides of
40k, quite a bit to each side I believe, but the absolutely best ones,
are not available for money alone - they need a specific environment to
thrive. As a fresh startup, you already have one of the possible
ingredients.
I would also ask the question - do you really need the developer to be
in house? Sometimes it's better to benefit from having access to the
people that is right for each part of the job, rather than trying to get
one person to everything. Plus, using the best talents for the different
tasks within the very broad definition "web development", I believe may
be cheaper in the long run as well. Of course there is a bit of overhead
with managing may people rather than one, but if you want the best,
that's what you have to do.
This (finding the right people, following up, making stuff happen,
making sure everyone understands each other, etc.) happens to be exactly
what I do for a living (sorry about the blatant advert).
Ronny.

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience of using Skype for Business as their primary phone system within their start-up?

My business is really taking off and I'm now bringing on board my first members of staff. As part of this we're kindly being housed by a friend's company, but no phones are being provided and I'm looking for an effective and cheap system to use for our internal and mobile phone network that we can take with us and scale in the future.

My plan is to provide staff with mobiles but use Skype for Business as the primary switchboard service: i.e. SkypeIn will be the main business telephone number, then use something like Pretty May Call Centre for Skype (http://www.prettymay.net/callcenter/index.htm) or On State to handle and divert calls internally. If I can provide staff with skypephones then this will cut out a further portion of call costs and allow skype to be the main calling system throughout, avoiding higher rates.

Has anyone used Skype in this way and how have they found it? As a reasonably frugal start-up I'd rather not have to invest in quite expensive phone systems or contract packages (especially BT!) so thought this might be a good way to keep costs low. Any thoughts – or am I creating more work than it's worth?

Credit Suisse use it (in Singapore) or at least they use some form of
VoIP. I've used it in a small company (30 people) split between
Mumbai/London. Call quality can drop if insufficient bandwidth is
allocated for each call. This becomes obvious at busy times. Search
for 'voip bandwidth' for details.

Thanks for the leads, I now know why I haven’t unsubscribed from this group.

It’s all a little over my head though. Are any of you expert in this area or know anyone who is?

No expert but I do know there are plenty of VoIP APIs out there you can use:

Jaduka for example plus Skype has its own API. For PBX type stuff Asterix has an

API.

You should be aware that Skype VoIP is non-standard

(http://www.sipgate.co.uk/user/press_release.php?id=76) but has recently jumped
