Hi Andy,
I've just submitted a new software patent in the Web 2.0 space. Having been involved in patents before, I now file first in the US since ultimately that is the market that you (or at least most Web 2.0 companies) need to defend if you have internet wide ambitions so it is a good place to start. Simply put, the US is the market you need to conquer to make it big, and that's the market which companies that matter fight over.
There's also another reason - we just filed quite a complex patent in the US for, all said, about $12500 (~£9K). Last time I filed a complex patent over here in the UK it was much more expensive.
The attorney I used is Deepak Malhotra [[address removed]] www.patentsusa.com. Checkout his site, he's very good.
Best, Dominic

You should speak to George Myrants (or one of his colleagues) at
TradeMark Consultants Co.

He's one of the UKs leading patent & trademark specialists, but still
with very sensible fees. Has even won a case against Microsoft!
